A Shiraz-Syrah Celebration
The pioneering spirit of our father, Adrian Bührer, reveals itself in every vintage. It was he who decided to plant Shiraz as the primary varietal on Saxenburg when purchasing the farm in 1989. Back then it was not seen as a popular nor wise decision, yet with his foresight, it turned out to be exactly perfect for our area in Stellenbosch, our terroir and the many accolades it has and continues to receive.⠀⠀
We raise a glass to our father, who instead of following trends, decided he was going to set them, and this is what he did with Saxenburg. Now, for us to keep these standards as high as his, for both you and him!⠀

The Source of Syrah
“The terroir of the Polkadraai Hills where Saxenburg is located is characterised by hilly topography and consequently varying elevations, providing sites on elevations from 100 to 320 meters above sea level.
There is an abundance of aspects, but the region is dominated by southerly facing slopes, that are ideally positioned to benefit from cooling ocean breezes. Although small pockets of sandstone can be found, the majority of the soils here are formed from granite. They vary in texture from very sandy, to more structured, with each of these bringing unique qualities to the resulting wines.
It is our belief that the unique combination of the above factors and, the impact they have on the wines produced from these slopes, is what sets the Polkadraai Hills apart. Saxenburg Select Shiraz 2015
A collection of uncompromised perfection in a bottle. Produced only in optimal years and sourced from the best vineyards on the farm, the Saxeburg Shiraz Select Collection is the true expression of Saxenburg’s very finest grapes.
The newly released SSS 2015 has already received international acclaim by Decanter; winning a prestigious Gold Medal and scoring 95 points.
The Saxenburg Select Shiraz 2015 is an incredible expression of Shiraz and a true showcase of the heights the variety can reach on Saxenburg soils. An impressive nose showing cranberry, black pepper, blueberries and a hint of dried herbs. The palate is beautifully focused and tight, bringing balance to the incredible structure and dense tannins. The oak is beautifully integrated and this wine develops wonderfully with time in the glass – revealing more of its beauty and complexity over time.

Our Saxenburg Private Collection Syrah 2017 achieved Top 10 status in the second annual Wine Mag Prescient Shiraz Report 2020. “A complex nose with some floral perfume before red and blackberries, pepper and spice. The palate is intensely flavoured but not weighty with lovely bright acidity and fine tannins. The first vintage to be labelled as Syrah and not Shiraz, this has Rhône-like pizzazz.” – Prescient Shiraz Report 2020.
“This is the first vintage labelled as Syrah and not Shiraz. This reflects the efforts in the vineyard and winery to strive for greater elegance and balance while staying true to the heritage of Saxenburg. The Saxenburg Private Collection Syrah 2017 has a beautiful nose of black cherries, red berries and a hint of pepper and spice. The palate is seamless – the tannin dense, but finely grained. Hints of oak are beautifully integrated and only adds to the incredible complexity.
