Tasting Notes

The Family Series Winemaker’s Blend Red 2022 has a dense violet colour to the wine. Concentrated dark fruit and cassis notes develop into layered black currant, blueberry, strawberry, mocha, dark cherry and aromatic herb notes. The palate has a juicy entry with a fine, well-integrated tannin and firm structure. The mouthfeel is coating and lingers on the palate.

Winemaker’s Comments

To me, crafting this wine was like putting paint on a canvas. I knew that I wanted our Submerged cap Cabernet Sauvignon to be the centrepiece. It is a dark and broody component with mulberry, cassis and pomegranate. On the palate, it is concentrated and tense. The whole-bunch Syrah brings light to the blend with cheerful cherry and cinnamon characters as well as a carbonic note to lift the wine. Finally, the Malbec comes from an earlier pick to fill in the gaps, adding texture to the wine as well as layers of fruit.

Vinification Details:	All components were fermented separately in open-top fermenters and then matured in 300L barrels. Apart from the Syrah component (25%), all components were destemmed, but not crushed. The Cabernet Sauvignon was a Submerged cap fermentation, where the skins remain suspended in the must throughout the fermentation. The Syrah was a whole bunch ferment from a portion of the Diamond block where leaf breaking was done. The Malbec comes from a block of bushvines and was an earlier pick to bring fresh ripe fruit to the blend. These components were then matured in 2nd fill barrels and the rest of the blend in 4th fill barrels for 12 months, before blending.
