Harvest Report 2025:

The 2025 vintage at Saxenburg has proven to be one of remarkable balance, complexity, and promise—a year full of potential that will be remembered for its near-ideal growing conditions and excellent fruit quality.

Following a winter of good rainfall and cold temperatures, the 2024/2025 growing season began with replenished soil moisture and optimal dormancy for the vines. Spring arrived smoothly, with even bud break and minimal threats from disease. Summer temperatures were moderate throughout the season, with few heat spikes and more consistent cool evenings. This is perfect for a slow ripening period and is ideal for maintaining natural acidity while achieving full phenolic ripeness.

Periodic light rains in December and early January replenished the vineyards without causing undue disease pressure. As a result, canopy health remained strong, and veraison was even and timely. The cooler nights in February extended the ripening window, allowing us to harvest with precision at optimal ripeness.

Harvest began in early February with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, followed by Chenin, Pinotage and early picked Syrah towards the end of February. Our Cabernet Sauvignon entered the cellar in late February/early March, and we finished with the harvest on the 18th of March, with our last Syrah picks. The timing was ideal, with minimal disruption from rain, allowing for calm, measured picking decisions based on flavour and tannin development rather than sugar alone.

Yields trended back to the norm at Saxenburg after fluctuating in the last few years but were slightly above the 10-year average, thanks to excellent flowering and fruit set in the spring. Despite the generous crop, quality remained uncompromised, with concentrated fruit, vibrant acidity, and superb structure across both whites and reds.

At this early stage, the 2025 whites show outstanding purity and brightness. Sauvignon Blanc displays lifted tropical notes with crisp acidity. Chardonnay, particularly from cooler pockets, shows great depth, with elegant stone fruit and citrus notes.

The red varietals benefited greatly from the long, moderate ripening season. Pinotage and Syrah are already showing plush fruit and silky tannins, while Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits dark fruit, fine tannic grip, and the promise of exceptional longevity. There’s a vibrancy and clarity to the 2025 reds that speaks to the vintage’s finesse and age-worthiness.

The 2025 harvest has reaffirmed the Polkadraai Hills’ reputation as one of the prominent wine-growing wards in Stellenbosch. With the beneficial climate of 2025 and continued attention in the cellar, we are confident this vintage will produce wines of elegance, freshness, and enduring character. We eagerly look forward to sharing these wines with you in the years to come.
