Synonymous with Success: A Shiraz-Syrah Celebration
Last Friday we celebrated the pioneering spirit of our father, Adrian Bührer, as he enjoyed his 70th birthday. The number 7 is a special one for us as a family as it represents each of us; our two parents and five siblings.
We also hold close the number 3, represented by the 3 Guinea Fowl of our logo, and so we have released three excellent wine options for you to celebrate over 30 years of his favourite, Shiraz.
With generations before him also passionate about the wine industry and having produced a premium Syrah for 20 years in France – our father has a deep love for South Africa and is a firm believer of its incredible potential, especially in wine and Syrah-Shiraz. With this, Shiraz was the primary varietal he decided to plant on Saxenburg when purchasing the farm in 1989. An unpopular decision at the time, yet with his foresight and staying steadfast to success, it turned out to be perfect for this specific site in Stellenbosch, the terroir and is showcased in the many accolades it has and continues to receive.
His leadership has shown us always to want to achieve the best but firstly be driven by passion and love, most notably for family. As the 1st custodian of Saxenburg, he thought in generations as opposed to years, for which we are most thankful, and it continues to define him as a visionary as Saxenburg succeeds. With all of this and more, Saxenburg’s Shiraz has seen itself acknowledged amongst the elite awards. A few highlights include the first South African Shiraz in Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100, poured across First Class airlines, numerous five stars from Platters and even included in the famed ‘Wine Bible’ book.

We raise a glass to our father, who instead of following trends, decided he was going to set them, and this is what he did with Saxenburg. He is a man of humility, and believes it is the only way to go through life, but will thrive in the most challenging conditions, perhaps not unlike Syrah itself. May we continue with pride to pursue a similar passion and success as the second generation of custodians.

The Saxenburg Select Shiraz 2015 is an incredible expression of Shiraz and a true showcase of the heights the variety can reach on Saxenburg soils.
An impressive nose showing cranberry, black pepper, blueberries and a hint of dried herbs.
The palate is beautifully focused and tight, bringing balance to the incredible structure and dense tannins.
The oak is beautifully integrated, and this wine develops wonderfully with time in the glass – revealing more of its beauty and complexity over time.

Syrah 2017
Our Private Collection wines are ones of distinction and elegance. A momentous occasion for the estate as this is the first vintage labelled as Syrah and not Shiraz.
Saxenburg Private Collection Syrah
The Saxenburg Private Collection Syrah 2017 has a beautiful nose of black cherries, red berries and a hint of pepper and spice.
The palate is seamless – the tannin dense, but finely grained. Hints of oak are beautifully integrated and only adds to the incredible complexity.
A note of crushed granite and floral elements brings freshness to the palate that finishes with sweet spice.
Our new Syrah reflects the efforts in the vineyard and winery to strive for greater elegance and balance while staying true to the heritage of Saxenburg.
