Introducing Saxenburg’s New Head Winemaker

Brendan Smith

With a passion for Syrah and an MSc in Oenology, Brendan Smith is the newly appointed
Winemaker of Saxenburg. His philosophy is “to create wines of consistent quality” and strives to
deliver a wine that reflects a sense of place in every bottle.

He studied a BSc in Viticulture and Oenology at Stellenbosch University and went on to do his
MSc in Oenology for which he achieved the “Cum Laude” distinction. After completing his MSc, he
worked in Bordeaux and while living in France he tasted his way across Europe from Portugal to
Italy, sampling some of Europe’s most notable wines.

Brendan joins us from the team at Rust en Vrede and Guardian Peak where he has been for four
years. He has also completed harvests at Groot Constantia and Rupert and Rothschild.

“Saxenburg represents a new challenge for me, a unique terroir on the polkadraai hills made up of
sites bursting with potential. Working with the dedicated and dynamic team at Saxenburg I hope
to continue this rich legacy and craft wines of impeccable finesse, bringing a Saxenburg moment
to each person visiting this historic site.” Brendan Smith
