Tasting Notes

The Family Series Winemaker’s Blend 2021 has a nose that shows beautiful notes of ripe yellow pears, baked apples, and sweet apricot blossoms. The fruit follows through to a palate that is textured and marked by a soft, but lingering acidity. There is a sense of minerality throughout the palate, which is a wonderful counterbalance for the richness derived from extended lees ageing.

Winemaker’s Comments

Blending this wine is always a fun and interesting exercise. I aim to blend a wine of incredible balance and to constantly have a beautiful play between all the varieties. This wine is truly alive, and each cultivar will shine through more prominently at different stages of maturation, making for an engaging and thought-provoking drinking experience.

Vinification Details:	All components were picked separately and fermented and matured in older oak barrels for 11 months prior to blending and bottling. The Chenin blanc was picked from a particularly rocky section of the block, whole bunch pressed and settled without enzymes, before being spontaneously fermented and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation. The Chardonnay component is predominantly from a 23-year-old vineyard, the fruit is also hand-picked and whole bunch pressed before fermentation in barrel. The Semillon hails from one of our highest lying vineyards at 280m above sea level, planted on weak, quartz-rich soil, while the Sauvignon blanc is from a 28-year-old vineyard just below it. Both components were destemmed and received some skin contact before fermentation.
