1998 Private Collection Merlot
The fruit profile is much riper, with some meatiness adding complexity —loads of blueberries and strawberries. Tannins are fine and soft, but still lends some grip and the wine is beautifully textured. Acidity is discernible but well balanced. Well-made and will last for a few more years.
2000 Private Collection Merlot
This wine has maintained its colour beautifully. The nose is slightly reserved, and should do well with decanting, but is beautifully delicate. Overall the wine is much more layered, nuanced and complex. Ripe plum, cherries, dark chocolate and oak spice, comes to mind. Tannins are still very much present and are wonderfully drying. Great purity and tastes about ten years old.
2005 Private Collection Merlot – Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show 2008 Winner: Grande Roche Trophy for Best Merlot
Ripe and very concentrated. It is big and powerful, but balanced and beautifully poised. Tannins are fine-grained and offer plenty of grip —beautiful fruit, coupled with toffee and a hint of eucalyptus oil. Great freshness…
2006 Private Collection Merlot
Very similar in style to 2005. Ripe fruit, with a meatiness and sweet spice such as nutmeg. Tannins are structured and wonderfully grippy. The palate is still tight. There is a hint of greenness, but this offers freshness and is not offensive — another excellent wine to enjoy.
2007 Private Collection Merlot
Good fruit intensity – ripe cherries and prunes – coupled with meatiness, dried herbs and a slight herbaceous note. The wine is beautifully fresh on the entry, with good tannin structure, but the tannin finishes a bit too abruptly. The acidity is bright, but not too harsh. Opens up incredibly in the glass.
2011 Private Collection Merlot
Beautiful nose, showing loads of fruit, cherries, tea leaves and some oak spice. The palate has a lovely freshness, is well balanced and long. The tannins offer some grip and texture. This wine is still youthful, but drinking beautifully now.
