A chat with our Western Cape Wine Ambassador, Michelle Bock

What is your favourite Saxenburg wine and why?
Not to sound biased but I love all our wines, even our Sauvignon Blanc as I am not always a fan of this specific cultivar. If I have to choose though, it would be our Private Collection Pinotage. It has very little wood and really captures what Pinotage was meant to be, in my opinion….and ooooh that nose!

How did you get into the wine industry?
Wine has always intrigued me and after completing WSET Level 1, I was completely hooked! Having a sales background it only made sense to pursue my true passion and join the Saxenburg Sales team.

What would you say is the most challenging part of your job?
South Africa has an abundance of fantastic wines. In order to stand out you have to constantly be at it and out there, not to mention persistent, especially when it comes to arranging tastings with the wine list decision-makers.

What is your favourite wine and food pairing?
Call me boring but nothing beats a good old fashioned cheese and wine pairing.

Is there any tasting or dinner that you’ve done while at Saxenburg that stands out for you?
Definitely the “Supper Club” at Blanko, they paired our Chardonnay with a Gorgonzola, Proscuitto and Walnut Gnocchi and also the Stack’s “Art, Wine and Dine” evening where they served our La Reve dessert wine with a colourful Vanilla Panna Cotta…yum!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Exploring unfamiliar cultivars and interesting styles of wine, I have learned that in this industry, learning should never stop.

What is one of the most rewarding things about your job?
Seeing people as excited about our brand and wines as I am…and of course a new listing!
